⬇️ AI might be sabatoging women’s careers

AI chatbots (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot etc) has been shown to give unfair pay advice to women and people from under-represented communities. Women who asked for advice were advised much lower salaries than men for the same roles, sometimes up to $120,000 less. Even with the same qualifications. Experts from a study say bias can occur even if gender and race aren’t mentioned directly, because AI can pick up on cues like names or remember user traits across sessions. This raises concerns about using AI for career advice and highlight the risk of making workplace inequity worse. These hidden biases could harm future career aspirations.

What can you do?

1) Swap demographics in your prompts (instructions) when chatting with AI. Try changing your name or background to see if the recommendations change.

2) Compare AI answers with market data. Do some research with real market info or reliable pay calculators.

3) Ask AI to verify its bias. Directly question the AI about whether its advice would differ for other identities.

4) Raise awareness. Talk about AI bias (share this newsletter) with friends, family or at work to make people more aware of the problem.

5) Find allies and mentors. Support networks can help challenge unfair guidance and help you advocate for yourself.
